Scammer claiming to be the CTP Regulator

The CTP Regulator has been made aware of a recent instance of car crash scamming, with the scammer pretending to be from the Regulator’s office and contacting a person with a CTP claim for information. As with many scams, the injured person was contacted unexpectedly and asked for their personal information, in this case in relation to being in a motor vehicle accident.

The CTP Regulator will never initiate a telephone call to ask for details about your accident.

If you have been in a motor vehicle accident, be careful with cold calls. Scammers can be very sophisticated and may pretend to be from the government or an insurer. Often, the scammer will pretend to help you lodge a claim. They may promise you compensation or a 'payout'. Ultimately, scammers are seeking to collect personal information to sell to other people.

If you're contacted unexpectedly after being in a motor vehicle accident and are offered something you weren't anticipating:

  • ask for proof that the caller is who they say they are
  • search for the number online, if a phone number is displayed.

If in doubt, don't provide any personal details, hang up, and report it to the CTP Regulator by:

You can remain anonymous.
