Scammers are selling personal information
The CTP Regulator has been made aware of recent instances of car crash scamming.
As with many scams, people are contacted unexpectedly about being in a motor vehicle accident and asked for their personal information. The scammers then sell this information to other people.
If you have been in a motor vehicle accident, be wary of cold calls. Scammers can be very sophisticated and may pretend to be from the government or an insurer.
Often, the scammer will pretend to help you lodge a claim. They may promise you compensation or a 'payout'.
If you're contacted unexpectedly after being in a motor vehicle accident and are offered something you weren't anticipating:
- ask for proof that the caller is who they say they are
- if a phone number is displayed, search for the number online.
If in doubt, don't provide any personal details, hang up, and report it to the CTP Regulator:
- complete the Report a car crash scamming form
- calling us on 1300 303 558 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
You can remain anonymous if you wish.
